How to Choose a Bathrobe: Fabric, Weight and Size
Bathrobe or dressing gown, what GSM means and how to pick the right fit.
How to choose a bathrobe: The short answer
For after a bath, shower or pool, choose a towelling bathrobe in cotton: it absorbs water and keeps you warm. A lighter dressing gown suits lounging and cooler mornings but will not dry you. Look for 100% cotton, a weight you will be comfortable in and a size that wraps easily over your clothes or pyjamas.
Bathrobe vs dressing gown
In the UK the two words are often used for the same thing. The practical difference is the fabric. A bathrobe is usually towelling, made to absorb water. A dressing gown can be fleece, cotton or waffle and is mainly for warmth.
What GSM means
GSM is grams per square metre, a measure of how dense the fabric is. A higher number generally means a thicker, heavier and warmer robe. A lower number means a lighter robe that dries faster. Our bathrobe is 450 GSM, a comfortable mid-weight for everyday use.
Plain or jacquard
Plain towelling has a soft, even surface. Jacquard weaves a pattern into the fabric itself rather than printing it on top. Our bathrobe comes in both, in six colours.
How to choose a bathrobe: Choosing your size
Our bathrobe comes in sizes S to XXL. If you are between sizes or like a roomy fit, choose the larger size.
Looking after it
Follow the care label, wash with similar colours and avoid overloading the machine. Go easy on fabric softener, which can coat the fibres and reduce absorbency.

Frequently asked questions
How to choose a bathrobe: What is the difference between a bathrobe and a dressing gown?
A bathrobe is usually towelling and made to absorb water after bathing. A dressing gown is mainly for warmth and can be fleece, cotton or waffle.
What GSM is best for a bathrobe?
It depends how you use it. A lighter weight suits a warm bathroom or travel. A heavier weight suits cold mornings. Our 450 GSM robe is an everyday middle option.
Can I wear a bathrobe after swimming?
Yes. A cotton towelling robe absorbs water well, which is why many people use one after the pool or a spa visit.
